The Kawasaki disease was first described on its current form in 1967 by Tomisaku Kawasaki. The syndrome is rapidly related to the infantile periarteritis nodosa, already reported from Western Europe in 1870. Cardiac complications were clearly proven in 1974, at the time of the first English report. The disease was then described worldwide and recognised as the first cause of acquired heart disease in children.
